Lipstick and rap at Rob Kelly and Rebecca Creighton’s launch party

May 17, 2012 in Blog, Irish Daily Star

Starplus recently attended the launch party for Rob Kelly and Rebecca Creighton’s video for new single The Real Thing and caught up with the former reality show star to see what else she’s been up to and how the track got hooked up in the first place.

The Tallaght singer told us that they met up to do the track after a chance meeting between Rebecca and a friend of Rob’s on a plane.

When Irish DJ Mo-K ran into the former X Factor starlet, he asked her to lend her vocals to Kelly’s track after the singer originally pencilled in to do the job fell through.

The track has been on heavy rotation on taste-making station BBC Radio 1Xtra in recent weeks and it’s also been doing the rounds here in Ireland. The video even notched up 20,000 views in the few weeks it’s been on YouTube.

Rebecca has also called it a day with her X Factor finalist band Belle Amie. The now-100 per cent solo singer considers The X Factor to have been a positive experience — although she was unhappy towards the end of her time in the band. Rebecca said: “Me and the girls didn’t really end on a good note…I would have liked to.”

She still keeps in contact with Cher, Treyc and Rebecca from X Factor — and was only recently chatting to Niall Horan from One Direction.

She explained: “I asked him, ‘Do you need to actually pinch yourself sometimes?’ and he was like, ‘Bex all the time’.

“He’s like, ‘We’re in Sweden with the best songwriters ever’ and he was just like, ‘I don’t even believe it’.”

Rebecca is now in the studio working on new material and has a follow up single planned, also with Rob Kelly. She even has another duet, with Gari Deegan from The Voice of Ireland, in the works.

With Gari also there to support the launch, Starplus took the opportunity to see what has been going on with him since getting the chop from the hit show. Gari revealed he’s been gigging with Bressie, DJing, writing and spending time in the studio.

Ruth-Anne, Bressie’s right-hand woman on The Voice of Ireland, had said to him before the live finals began that she’d like to work with him, whatever happened. And Gari said he is holding her to it and told us he is planning to travel to LA in June to meet up — and maybe soak up some of that LA sunshine.

Unfortunately for Rob and Rebecca, the performance of the single started out badly after their guitarist failed to show up, and a microphone failed — leaving them to share the remaining mic.

Rebecca kicked off proceedings, then Rob did his thing and handed the mic back with the room erupting in laughter thanks to Rob being covered with the pink lipstick Rebecca had accidentally left on the microphone.

Unfortunately, no amount of rubbing would get it off and this proved too much for Rebecca who collapsed in a fit of giggles, unable to keep a straight face or even continue singing.

It was a memorable performance, in every sense, leaving Starplus and the crowd laughing as everyone shot off to the after-party.
